Moving to Jonathon’s family farm meant a lot of things to us. We knew we’d have a space of our own, we’d be closer to family, and we’d be growing on untouched land that had been used years before as winter cattle feeding.
We expected the soil to be pretty top notch and were excited this spring to see how our crops would grow. All I can say is wow – we are we blown away!
In the last week we’ve received 3 1/2″ of rain (3/4″ Sunday, 1 1/2″ Tuesday, and 1 1/4″ last night). Our soil last year would be flooded at this point again. But our soil this year has soaked it up like a sponge and held on so well that since we’ve transplanted our first crop of onions in May, we’ve barely had to use our drip irrigation. We are thankful beyond words to be on our new plot of earth.
So here’s the big news: We are delivering a week early this season! Deliveries are starting this week, Monday, June 22 (Jamestown & on-farm pick up) and Thursday, June 25 (Bismarck & Hazen).
We had a few crops that we realized quickly would be ready early, but until yesterday, we still thought we’d have to wait until Thursday, June 25 to start deliveries. So this week’s box will include: lettuce, radishes, asian greens (pac choy & tatsoi), spinach, chard or kale, and possibly spring onions.
