It may seem odd for a vegetable farm to bake and sell sourdough goods, but ever since our time in Australia sourdough has been a passion project for me (Hannah). I’ve been baking and experimenting for the last 7 years off and on, more seriously in the last 2 years. Our sourdough sales are also a great source of off-season income for the farm. The 2018 season was a big year for us, selling close to 40 loaves (baked out of our home kitchen!) every Saturday at the BisMarket farmers market. And in 2019 with the rental of an off-farm certified kitchen, we nearly doubled our production with close to 80 loaves baked, 25 packs of pizza crusts and the now famous sourdough chocolate chip cookies. All of our goods are baked with Organic flours and almost always organic ingredients (with the exception of a few ingredients).
With our recent move to Mandan we have lost access to the certified kitchen we were using. We tried baking for a few winter markets in our new space, but it didn’t pan out (no pun intended). We have big plans to renovate a space here on the farm into a certified kitchen, but before we get there we’ll hopefully be purchasing a new oven and some minor equipment to get baking again for the farmers market season. We’d love to be able to offer our Bread CSA as we did last spring, but until we purchase the oven we’ll have to pause our large bakes. Stay tuned!
